Back in 2013, cities in Mississippi were trying to find ways to end their absurdly long franchise agreements with companies such as AT&T due to terrible service. Meanwhile, they were also signing franchise agreements with C Spire for 25 years because they were that desperate for competition in their areas.
Now, C Spire is installing fiber optic cable in Mississippi for what the company is calling the first statewide 1 Gbps network in the United States. The first set of deployments will be in nine Mississippi cities: Batesville, Clinton, Corinth, Hattiesburg, Horn Lake, McComb, Quitman, Ridgeland and Starkville.
C Spire has been flooded with such high support from potential customers that out of the 81 areas scheduled for installment, 80 of them have paid the $10 pre-registration fee. C Spire expects to launch the service this summer.
AT&T in April announced its intentions to bring its 1-Gbps fiber service to 100 cities and municipalities nationwide but in reality will not be installing it for several years….at the earliest.
