By 2019, it is expected that we will see 160 trillion mobile and online messages sent yearly. This is an increase from past predictions claiming that by 2019, people would send a yearly total of 94.2 trillion messages. The figures include SMS, MMS, instant messaging, social media and email.
The research also confirms the continued trend away from SMS messaging and more towards online messaging services such as Tencent’s QQ, WhatsApp and WeChat.
As has been discussed by others in the past, the trend away from SMS usage by customers has been a financial disaster for wireless providers. It wasn’t that long ago when AT&T was charging customers more than 30 cents for every text message sent even though it cost the company virtually nothing to perform.
